Pomeranian puppies are confident, affectionate and surprisingly bold for their size. They suit apartment living well, but they need daily grooming and a patient, consistent trainer.

What is a Pomeranian's temperament like?

Pomeranians are lively, curious and very attached to their people. They tend to bond closely with one person, though they warm to the whole household over time. Without enough socialisation early on, they can become wary of strangers or other dogs.

How much grooming does a Pomeranian puppy need?

Pomeranian puppies need brushing several times a week to keep their double coat free of tangles. Shedding picks up in spring and autumn, when daily brushing helps a lot. A professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks keeps their coat manageable.

Are Pomeranians easy to train?

Pomeranians are intelligent, which means they pick up commands quickly, but they can also be stubborn. Short, positive training sessions work best. Without boundaries set early, they can develop habits like excessive barking that are harder to fix later.

Are Pomeranians good with children and other pets?

Pomeranians do better with older children who know how to handle small dogs gently. Toddlers can unintentionally frighten or hurt a dog this size. With other pets, early socialisation makes a big difference, and many Pomeranians live happily alongside cats and other dogs.

Who suits a Pomeranian and who may find it hard?

A Pomeranian may suit you if you:

  • Want a compact dog that does well in an apartment
  • Have time for daily brushing and regular grooming appointments
  • Are home often and can give your dog plenty of attention
  • Have older children or no young children
  • Enjoy an alert, engaged companion

A Pomeranian may be harder if you:

  • Are away from home for long hours regularly
  • Have toddlers or very young children
  • Prefer a low-shedding or low-maintenance coat
  • Want a naturally quiet dog with little training
  • Have very limited time for grooming

Before choosing a Pomeranian puppy, ask a reputable breeder about the parents' temperament and health testing. Your vet can advise on vaccinations, diet and parasite prevention for the breed.

Meet a Pomeranian at a Doga Sydney class

Seeing a Pomeranian in person is the best way to get a feel for the breed. Each class is 45 minutes of puppy yoga, then 15 minutes of puppy playtime, and the yoga is optional the whole time. We cannot promise a Pomeranian at every class, but with 18 to 20 puppies across 6 breeds each weekend, there is a good chance you will meet one.
